Nei cinque anni di vita di questo mio blog, ho avuto più volte modo di dimostrare la mia grande passione per la serie animata “Macross” (Chōjikū Yōsai Makurosu) del 1982 e, soprattutto, del successivo film cinematografico “Macross – Ai OboeteImasu Ka” datato 1984. “Macross” è un’opera che, insieme a “Mobile Suit Gundam”, ha sancito il successo dell’animazione giapponese nel mondo ed è ancora oggi un franchising di successo grazie a prequel e sequel che hanno ampliato la saga e, nonostante la qualità altalenante, rinfrescato la storia per le nuove generazioni. Ciò premesso, la serie TV del 1982 resta un culto insuperabile per tutti coloro che, come me, l’hanno vista da ragazzini. L’interesse per l’opera originaria è ancora oggi tanto vivo in Giappone da giustificare la commercializzazione di modelli in varie scale (da costruire o già assemblati) e di pubblicazioni come la collana Variable Fighter Master File di Soft Bank Publishing; collana nella quale si è recentemente aggiunto il volume VF-1S Roy Focker Special.

Dopo titoli come VF-1 “Valkyrie”, VF-1 Squadrons, VF-4 “Lightning III”, VF-25 “Messiah” e VF-1 Battroid, Soft Bank Publishing ci propone ora un volume interamente dedicato ad un mito assoluto: il caccia VF-1S di Roy Focker, asso della U.N. Spacy, la forza di difesa spaziale terreste.

La collana Variable Fighter Master File è una vera e propria enciclopedia dedicata agli aspetti più squisitamente tecnici dei caccia a configurazione variabile protagonisti di “Macross”. A precisi e dettagliati disegni meccanici si accompagnano diagrammi e profili che delineano le strategie di impiego militare dei caccia nonché le livree di squadriglie e reparti non mostrati nella serie e nel film sopra citati. E’ evidente trattarsi di materiale di grande interesse ed ispirazione per tutti gli appassionati ed i modellisti che, come me, desiderano creare modelli originali senza perdere l’ufficialità della propria opera. Esempio emblematico è il mio VF-1J “S-Fast Pack” che proprio da un profilo apparso su Variable Fighter Master File ha tratto ispirazione.

Dopo tanto materiale pubblicato nei volumi precedenti della Soft Bank Publishing, non mi aspetto molto da questo VF-1S Roy Focker Special. E’, quindi, con grande sorpresa e piacere che, al contrario, ho costatato un libro interessantissimo e ricco di originalità come l’evoluzione che ha portato dal VF-0S al VF-1S, le varianti per equipaggiamento ed armamento missilistico, l’attività in sinergia con i velivoli di supporto come droni ed aerei da ricognizione.

Resta tristemente confermato il peccato originale che affligge l’intera collana Master File edita da Soft Bank Publishing: il testo in sola lingua giapponese che impedisce ad un occidentale poco a suo agio con gli ideogrammi nipponici di apprezzare fino in fondo il volume stesso. Ciononostante, anche questo Variable Fighter Master File – VF-1S Roy Focker Special è un volume imperdibile ed assolutamente inimmaginabile solo pochi anni fa.

In the five years of life of this blog, I had the opportunity to demonstrate several times my great passion for the animated series “Macross” (Chōjikū Yōsai Makurosu) of 1982 and, above all, the subsequent film “Macross – Ai OboeteImasu Ka” dated 1984. “Macross” is a work that, together with “Mobile Suit Gundam“, has determined the success of Japanese animation in the world and is still a successful franchise thanks to prequels and sequels that have expanded the saga and, despite the fluctuating quality, refreshed the story for new generations. That said, the 1982 TV series remains an unsurpassed cult for anyone who, like me, watched it as a kid. The interest in the original work is still so alive today in Japan to justify the marketing of models in various scales (to build or already assembled) and publications such as the series Variable Fighter Master File by Soft Bank Publishing; series in which was recently added the volume VF-1S Roy Focker Special.

After titles such as VF-1 “Valkyrie”, VF-1 Squadrons, VF-4 “Lightning III“, VF-25 “Messiah” and VF-1 Battroid, Soft Bank Publishing now offers a volume entirely dedicated to an absolute myth: the VF-1S fighter of Roy Focker, ace of the U.N. Spacy, the terrestrial space defense force.

The Variable Fighter Master File series is a veritable encyclopedia dedicated to the technical aspects of the variable configuration fighters that are the protagonists of “Macross“. Precise and detailed mechanical drawings are accompanied by diagrams and profiles that outline the strategies of military use of the fighters as well as the insignias of squadrons not shown in the series and the film mentioned above. It is clear that this is material of great interest and inspiration for all fans and modelers who, like me, want to create original models without losing the official nature of their work. An emblematic example is my VF-1J “S-Fast Pack” that from a profile appeared on Variable Fighter Master File has drawn inspiration.

After so much material published in the previous volumes of Soft Bank Publishing, I did not expect much from this VF-1S Roy Focker Special. It is, therefore, with great surprise and pleasure that, on the contrary, I found a very interesting book full of originality such as the evolution that led from VF-0S to VF-1S, the variants for equipment and missile armament, the activity in synergy with support aircraft such as drones and reconnaissance aircraft.

The original sin that afflicts the entire Master File series published by Soft Bank Publishing is sadly confirmed: the text is in Japanese only, which prevents a Westerner from fully appreciating the volume itself. Nonetheless, even this Variable Fighter Master File – VF-1S Roy Focker Special is an unmissable volume and absolutely unimaginable only a few years ago.
