Shunya Yamashita è un illustratore nipponico di cui ho avuto spesso occasione di parlare sulle pagine di questo blog. Il suo stile elegante ed essenziale fonde sapientemente la nostalgia delle pin-up degli anni ’40 e ’50 con una moderna iconografia pop dai mille colori sgargianti. E’ davvero difficile non restare ammaliati dal fascino diretto e sincero delle ragazze oggetto delle illustrazioni di Yamashita. Non deve, quindi, stupire che l’entertainment nipponico attinga a piene mani dall’arte di questo prolifico autore. Coinvolgenti libri d’illustrazioni come “Plastic Angels” volumi 1 e 2 sono affiancati alle figure della prolifica collana “Bishoujo Statue” di Kotobukiya come, ad esempio, “Jaina Solo” e “Ghostbuster Girl” che ho giusto recensito su questo sito. Se ciò non bastasse, le illustrazioni di Shunya Yamashita sono state usate come referenza anche per molte altre Japan Figure dedicate ai personaggi più noti del panorama Anime e Manga nipponico. Non fanno eccezione le protagoniste di “Neon Genesis Evangelion” di cui ho già recensito “Rebuild of Evangelion – Shikinami Asuka Langley”, “Soryu Asuka Langley – 2010 Version” ed ho da poco acquistato “Rebuild of Evangelion – Mari Makinami Illustrious” oggetto di questo articolo.

Prodotta dalla società giapponese Flare, questa figure ha numerosi pregi. Prima di tutto, rispetta appieno l’illustrazione di Yamashita da cui è tratta. A differenza di tanti suoi colleghi, Yamashita ha uno stile che enfatizza i tratti sexy di un personaggio femminile senza mai esagerarne le forme. Ciò conferisce un grande fascino alle sue pin-up senza trasformarle in irrealistiche bambole senz’anima. Yamashita conferma questa sua capacità anche con il soggetto in questione, l’enigmatica ed esuberante Mari Makinami Illustrious, che fiorisce nella pienezza della sua erotica maturità proprio grazie al tratto di Shunya Yamashita.  Vale anche la pena rilevare che la plugsuit rosa indossata dal personaggio per pilotare l’Evangelion 08 si presterebbe facilmente a variazioni più o meno sadomaso. Yamashita riesce a non cadere in questo facile tranello reinventando la tuta con un stile che, pur offrendo qualche apprezzabile nudità, non sfocia nel cattivo gusto. Infine, il fucile di precisione che imbraccia il personaggio è lo stesso (in dimensioni ridotte) di quello che usa l’Evangelion 08, si crea così un duo che, personalmente, adoro.

La figure “Rebuild of Evangelion – Mari Makinami Illustrious” è in PVC ed è commercializzata già montata e dipinta. Come spesso mi capita, ho acquistato il recast in resina realizzato da E2046 benché in violazione dei copyright a capo di artisti e società. A mia parziale discolpa rilevo che le figure commercializzate in PVC non hanno una versione ufficiale in resina da montare e colorare. Un modellista come me si trova così costretto ad acquistare dei recast per compensare questo vuoto di mercato dovuto al diffuso disinteresse del pubblico per il modellismo. Mi consola sapere che, così facendo, non sto sottraendo fatturato a società ed artisti che operano regolarmente poiché mai comprerei, ufficiale o pirata, una figure precolorata.

Come mi è capitato di confermare in articoli precedenti, E2046 realizza recast decisamene di buona qualità e questo kit non fa eccezione. I dettagli sono ben riprodotti, i pezzi sono definiti e senza bave eccessive, la resina è uniforme e priva di vuoti generati dall’aria rimasta intrappolata nello stampo.

Ciò detto, non è tutto oro quel che brilla. I recast non sempre sono in grado di replicare al meglio la figure originaria. La resina è un materiale molto rigido perciò tende a spezzarsi nei casi di parti particolarmente piccole e a deformarsi in caso di pezzi lunghi e sottili. Un esempio lampante è la canna del fucile di precisione incluso in questo kit che è chiaramente inutilizzabile. Non si tratta, comunque, di un grosso difetto; basterà sostituirla con un tondino in ottone o alluminio.

Shunya Yamashita is a Japanese illustrator who I have often had occasion to talk about in the pages of this blog. His elegant and essential style skilfully blends the nostalgia of the pin-ups of the ’40s and ’50s with modern pop iconography in a thousand bright colours. It is really hard not to be captivated by the direct and sincere charm of the girls in Yamashita’s illustrations. It should come as no surprise that Japanese entertainment draws heavily from the art of this prolific author. Artbooks such as “Plastic Angels” volumes 1 and 2 are flanked by figures from Kotobukiya’s prolific “Bishoujo Statue” series such as, for example, “Jaina Solo” and “Ghostbuster Girl” that I have just reviewed on this site. If that wasn’t enough, Shunya Yamashita’s illustrations have also been used as a reference for many other Japan Figures dedicated to the most famous characters of the Japanese Anime and Manga. The protagonists of “Neon Genesis Evangelion” are no exception. I’ve already reviewed “Rebuild of Evangelion – Shikinami Asuka Langley“, “Soryu Asuka Langley – 2010 Version” and I’ve just bought “Rebuild of Evangelion – Mari Makinami Illustrious“, object of this article.

Produced by the Japanese company Flare, this figure has many merits. First of all, it fully respects Yamashita’s illustration from which it is taken. Unlike so many of his colleagues, Yamashita has a style that emphasises the sexy features of a female character without ever exaggerating her form. This gives his pin-ups great charm without turning them into unrealistic, soulless dolls. Yamashita confirms this ability also with the subject in question, the enigmatic and exuberant Mari Makinami Illustrious, who flourishes in the fullness of her erotic maturity thanks to Shunya Yamashita’s style.  It is also worth noting that the pink plugsuit worn by the character to pilot the Evangelion 08 would easily lend itself to more or less sadomasochistic variations. Yamashita manages not to fall into this easy trap by reinventing the suit with a style that, while offering some appreciable nudity, does not border on bad taste. Finally, the sniper rifle that the character carries is the same (in reduced size) as the one used by Evangelion 08, thus creating a duo that I personally adore.

The figure “Rebuild of Evangelion – Mari Makinami Illustrious” is made of PVC and is sold already assembled and painted. As it often happens to me, I bought the resin recast made by E2046 although in violation of the copyrights of artists and companies. In my partial defense, I would like to point out that the figures sold in PVC do not have an official resin version to be assembled and coloured. A modeller like me is thus forced to buy recasts to compensate this market vacuum caused by the public’s lack of interest in modelling.

As I have confirmed in previous articles, E2046 makes very good quality recasts and this kit is no exception. The details are well reproduced, the pieces are defined and without excessive burrs, the resin is uniform and free of voids generated by the air trapped in the mould.

That said, not all that glitters is gold. Recasts are not always able to replicate the original figures in the best possible way. Resin is a very rigid material so it tends to break in the case of particularly small parts and to deform in the case of long, thin pieces. A glaring example is the barrel of the sniper rifle included in this kit, which is clearly unusable. This is not, however, a major defect; it will be very simple replace it with a brass or aluminum rod.
