Fervente modellista fin dall’infanzia, sono da sempre un grande appassionato di animazione giapponese degli anni ‘80/’90, ivi inclusa “Macross”, serie di cui nutro un culto assoluto. Quest’opera è andata in onda in Giappone nel 1981 e, rielaborata dall’americana Harmony Gold, è arrivata in Italia col nome di “Robotech”. Mi innamorai della serie fin dalla prima visione e, dopo tanti anni, continuo a considerarla un’opera innovativa, originale e di altissima qualità tanto da celebrarla con l’acquisto di vari prodotti dedicati fra cui una pletora di kit per me irrinunciabili in quanto fondono la mia passione per il modellismo con quella per “Macross”. A titolo di esempio, cito VF-1J “Super Battroid” Valkyrie Miria Custom, VF-1J Armored Valkyrie, Regult Recce Version e VF-1J SVF-41 “Black Aces” ma, soprattutto, segnalo i tre modelli da me completati:  VF-1J “S-Fast Pack”, SV-51γ e VF-0S “Phoenix”.

“Macross” racconta la storia di un’umanità in lotta per la sopravvivenza contro gli Zentradi, una razza aliena ostile. Usando la tecnologia recuperata da una nave spaziale precipitata sulla Terra e ribattezzata SDF-1, il governo terrestre unificato ha istituito la UN-Spacy, una forza spaziale equipaggiata con i caccia a configurazione variabile VF-1 “Valkyrie”, velivoli capaci di trasformarsi, tramite una forma intermedia chiamata “Gerwalk”, da aerei a robot umanoidi detti “Battroid”. Questi mecha sono il fulcro delle battaglie nella serie e sono diventati iconici tra gli appassionati di Anime e modellismo.

Esistono diverse versioni del VF-1 “Valkyrie”, tra cui il VF-1A, VF-1J e VF-1S, ognuna con caratteristiche e armamenti specifici. Per il combattimento nello spazio, i VF-1 “Valkyrie” sono equipaggiamenticon pack addizionali che prendono il nome di “Super” per i VF-1A/J e “Strike” per i VF-1S. Fuori da ogni standard è la versione “Armored Valkyrie”, equipaggiata con un’armatura pesante ed un variegato arsenale di missili. Questa versione è progettata per azioni ad alto rischio, dove la protezione aggiuntiva e la potenza di fuoco sono essenziali per il successo della missione.

Il VF-1 “Armored Valkyrie” è visibile, nella versione VF-1J, in un solo episodio della serie televisiva (puntata n. 9, intitolata “Miss Macross”) e per un paio di secondi nel bellissimo film cinematografico “Macross – Ai Oboete Imasu Ka” del 1984. Ciononostante, esistono interessanti libri e saggi che esplorano ed ampliano la tecnologia e la storia dell’universo di “Macross” ben oltre i prodotti animati. Questi testi, fra cui spicca la collana “Macross – Master File”, offrono una visione approfondita delle specifiche dei mecha e delle operazioni militari della guerra contro gli Zentradi, arricchendo esponenzialmente il worldbilding a disposizione degli appassionati.

Nel volume Variable Fighter VF-1 Battroid “Valkyrie”- Master File, viene descritta la “Bullseye Operation” in cui gli “Armored Valkyrie” giocano un ruolo cruciale. L’operazione si svolge nell’anno 2009, secondo la timeline ufficiale dell’universo di “Macross“, e si prefigge obiettivi cruciali per la difesa contro le forze aliene. L’operazione “Bullseye”, infatti, consiste in una potente incursione nel cuore della flotta nemica allo scopo di danneggiare le navi madri aliene e distruggere i vascelli di supporto e rifornimento. A livello strategico, la “Bullseye Operation” mira ad indebolire la capacità operativa degli Zentradi così da prevenire attacchi su larga scala e garantire la sicurezza delle colonie spaziali umane nonché, in ultima analisi, della Terra stessa.

Il piano di battaglia dell’operazione “Bullseye” affida agli “Armored Valkyrie” il compito di assestare i danni principali alla flotta avversaria. Grazie alla capacità di resistere al fuoco difensivo nemico grazie all’armatura addizionale di cui sono dotati, gli “Armored Valkyrie” devono spingersi in profondità nella flotta avversaria e colpire con precisione le parti critiche delle navi madre nemiche. A tale scopo, gli “Armored Valkyrie” impiegati nella “Bullseye Operation” sono equipaggiati con un armamento potenziato che include missili termonucleari RMS-1 agganciati agli avambracci. Risponde pienamente a tale descrizione il VF-1A “Armored Valkyrie” pilotato dal Warrant Officer Linus Philander, riprodotto nel kit oggetto del presente articolo.

Sono da sempre un fanatico del VF-1 nella versione “Armored Valkyrie”. Tale innamoramento è certamente dovuto all’episodio “Miss Macross”, fra i più belli delle 36 puntate che compongono la serie. Considerato ciò, non stupirà il fatto che abbia prontamente acquistato il kit VF-1J “Armored Valkyrie” con cui Hasegawa ha riprodotto proprio il velivolo pilotato dal protagonista, Hikaru Ikijo, nell’episodio “Miss Macross”. Potevo fermarmi qui? Certo che no! Ecco, quindi, che la mia collezione si è arricchita anche del VF-1A “Armored Valkyrie” Bullseye Operation, primo di due soggetti dedicato alla missione sopra descritta.

Il kit VF-1A “Armored Valkyrie” Bullseye Operation Part 1 dimostra la consolidata qualità Hasegawa ed è arricchito da una splendida box art del talentuoso Hidetaka Tenjin. La confezione include le parti aggiuntive previste per la missione nonché le decal necessarie a riprodurre le livree delle squadriglie impegnate nell’operazione “Bullseye”. In altre parole, questo kit è un must per chiunque modellista appassionato della serie “Macross”.

A fervent modeler since childhood, I have always been a great fan of Japanese animation of the 80s / 90s, including “Macross“, a series of which I have an absolute cult. This work was aired in Japan in 1981 and, reworked by the American Harmony Gold, arrived in Italy under the name of “Robotech“. I fell in love with the series from the first viewing and, after many years, I continue to consider it an innovative, original and very high quality work, so much so that I celebrated it with the purchase of various dedicated products including a plethora of kits that are vital to me as they merge my passion both for modeling and for “Macross“. As an example, I mention VF-1J “Super Battroid” Valkyrie Miria Custom, VF-1J Armored Valkyrie, Regult Recce Version and VF-1J SVF-41 “Black Aces” but, above all, I point out the three models I completed:  VF-1J “S-Fast Pack“, SV-51γ and VF-0S “Phoenix”.

“Macross” tells the story of a humanity fighting for survival against the Zentradi, a hostile alien race. Using technology recovered from a crashed spaceship renamed SDF-1, the unified Earth government has established the UN-Spacy, a space force equipped with the variable configurationfighters VF-1 “Valkyrie”, aircrafts capable of transforming, through an intermediate form called “Gerwalk“, from airplane to  humanoid robot called “Battroids“. These mecha are the centerpiece of battles in the series and have become iconic among fans of Anime and modeling.

There are several versions of the VF-1 “Valkyrie”, including the VF-1A, VF-1J and VF-1S, each with specific characteristics and armaments. For combat in space, the VF-1 “Valkyrie” are equipment with  additional packs that take the name of “Super” for the VF-1A/J and “Strike” for the VF-1S. Out of all standard is the “Armored Valkyrie” version, equipped with heavy armor and a varied arsenal of missiles. This version is designed for high-risk actions, where additional protection and firepower are essential to the success of the mission.

The VF-1 “Armored Valkyrie” is visible, in the VF-1J version, in only one episode of the television series (episode no. 9, entitled “Miss Macross“) and for a couple of seconds in the beautiful 1984 film “Macross – Ai Oboete Imasu Ka“. Nevertheless, there are interesting books that explore and expand the technology and history of the “Macross” universe far beyond animated products. These texts, among which the “Macross – Master File” series stands out, offer an in-depth view of the specifics of the mecha and military operations of the war against the Zentradi, exponentially enriching the worldbilding available to enthusiasts.

In the volumeVariable Fighter VF-1 Battroid “Valkyrie” – Master File, the “Bullseye Operation” is described and the “Armored Valkyries” play a crucial role. The operation takes place in the year 2009, according to the  official timeline of the “Macross” universe, and sets crucial objectives for defense against alien forces. Operation “Bullseye“, in fact, consists of a powerful incursion into the heart of the enemy fleet in order to damage the alien motherships and destroy the support and supply vessels. On a strategic level, the “Bullseye Operation” aims to weaken the operational capability of the Zentradi in order to prevent large-scale attacks and ensure the security of human space colonies and, ultimately, the Earth itself.

The battle plan of Operation “Bullseye” entrusts the “Armored Valkyries” with the task of dealing the main damage to the opposing fleet. Thanks to the ability to withstand enemy defensive fire thanks to the additional armor they are equipped with, the “Armored Valkyries” must push deep into the enemy fleet and accurately hit critical parts of enemy motherships. To this end, the “Armored Valkyrie” used in the “Bullseye Operation” are equipped with an enhanced armament that includes RMS-1 thermonuclear missiles attached to the forearms. The VF-1A “Armored Valkyrie” piloted by Warrant Officer Linus Philander, reproduced in the kit subject of this article, fully responds to this description.

I’ve always been a fan of the VF-1 in the “Armored Valkyrie” version. This falling in love is certainly due to the episode “Miss Macross“, one of the most beautiful of the 36 episodes that make up the series. Considering this, it will not be surprising that I promptly purchased the VF-1J “Armored Valkyrie“ kit with which Hasegawa reproduced the aircraft piloted by the protagonist, Hikaru Ikijo, in the episode “Miss Macross“. Could I stop here? Of course not! Here, then, my collection has also been enriched by the VF-1A “Armored Valkyrie” Bullseye Operation, the first of two subjects dedicated to the mission described above.

The VF-1A “Armored Valkyrie” Bullseye Operation Part 1 kit demonstrates the established Hasegawa quality and is enhanced by a beautiful box art by the talented Hidetaka Tenjin. The package includes the additional parts planned for the mission as well as the decals necessary to reproduce the insignias of the squadrons engaged in the “Bullseye” operation. In other words, this kit is a must-have for any passionate modeler of the “Macross” series.
