Una breve vacanza fatta qualche settimana fa, mi ha dato occasione di scoprire il Biellese. La zona era a me sconosciuta ed è bastata una passeggiata introno al Santuario di Oropa per costatare la bellezza delle montagne circostanti e far nascere in me il desiderio di visitare l’area in bici. Senza indugio, mi sono organizzato un’escursione sulle due ruote per sabato 19 novembre 2022. L’iniziativa è stata benedetta da quella luce intensa e vitale che solo le belle giornate a cavallo fra autunno ed inverno sanno regalare. E’, quindi, con grande entusiasmo che sono tornato nel Biellese e, parcheggiata la mia Opel “Mokka” lungo la strada che unisce Biella al Santuario di Oropa, ho scaricato dal portabici la mia Atala a pedalata assistita ed ho iniziato la mia avvenuta verso le nove del mattino.

La strada che conduce al santuario è abbastanza trafficata ma serpeggia all’interno di un’area boschiva i cui alberi regalavano ancora i colori intensi delle ultime foglie autunnali.

Affrontata l’ultima salita, sono arrivato al Santuario di Oropa nelle migliori condizioni possibili. Il sole del mattino illuminava il santuario di una luce vivida, facendo risplendere i marmi degli edifici sotto il cielo cobalto.

Appena sopra il Santuario di Oropa, ho imboccato la Provinciale 513 che, in verità, è una strada panoramica di una bellezza inaspettata. Voluta dal Senatore Rosazza, la strada unisce il Santuario di Oropa al Santuario di San Giovanni D’Andorno. Completata nel 1898 dopo ben dieci anni di lavori, la strada è un piccolo gioiello di ingegneria civile. Salendo dal Santuario di Oropa si incontrano tornati abbelliti da oratori e tempietti di gusto neoclassico fino ad arrivare alla Galleria Rosazza. Il percorso, infatti, non porta alla cima della montagna, bensì permette di raggiungere l’altro versante del monte grazie ad una galleria lunga poco meno di 400 metri e costruita in 4 anni di intensi lavori. Arrivati dall’altro lato, il viaggiatore è accolto da un albergo-ristorante che, attualmente in attività durante l’estate, fu ricavato dagli alloggi dei minatori una volta terminati i lavori della galleria. Dal ristorante, la strada scende rapidamente con numerosi e stretti tornanti fino al Santuario di San Giovanni D’Andorno.

Il Santuario di San Giovanni D’Andorno è meno noto di quello di Oropa ma sorprende per le inaspettate dimensioni ed è attualmente oggetto di lavori di restauro che lo stanno riportando ad antichi fasti.

Non pago di quanto fin qui fatto, ho proseguito lungo la Provinciale 513 fino ad arrivare a Rosazza, paese natale dell’omonimo senatore piemontese. Il borgo mi ha stupito molto per i numerosi edifici storici e lo stile ricercato degli stessi ma, benché fosse ora di pranzo, non ho trovato alcun locale aperto ove potermi ristorare.

Ripercorsa la strada dell’andata, sono ritornato al Santuario di Oropa poco prima delle tre del pomeriggio. Giusto in tempo per pranzare alla Trattoria Nocca con una meritata polenta concia.

Ho così chiuso un bellissimo tour in bici lungo poco meno di 40 chilometri e ricco di sorprese e panorami mozzafiato.

A short holiday a few weeks ago gave me the opportunity to discover the Biellese region. The area was unfamiliar to me and a walk around the Sanctuary of Oropa was enough to see the beauty of the surrounding mountains and give me the desire to visit the area by bike. Without delay, I organised an excursion on two wheels for Saturday 19 November 2022. The initiative was blessed with that intense, vital light that only the beautiful days between autumn and winter can give. So it was with great enthusiasm that I returned to the Biella area and, having parked my Opel “Mokka” along the road that connects Biella to the Sanctuary of Oropa, I unloaded my pedal-assisted Atala from the bike rack and began my journey at around nine in the morning.

The road leading to the sanctuary is quite busy but runs through a wooded area whose trees were still showing the intense colours of the last autumn leaves.

Having tackled the last climb, I arrived at the Sanctuary of Oropa in the best possible condition. The morning sun illuminated the sanctuary with a vivid light, making the marble of the buildings shine under the cobalt sky.

Just above the Sanctuary of Oropa, I took Provincial Road 513, which is actually a panoramic road of unexpected beauty. Commissioned by Senator Rosazza, the road joins the Sanctuary of Oropa to the Sanctuary of San Giovanni D’Andorno. Completed in 1898 after a total of ten years of work, the road is a small jewel of civil engineering. Climbing up from the Sanctuary of Oropa, you encounter hairpin bends embellished with oratories and small temples in neoclassical style until you reach the Rosazza Gallery. The route, in fact, does not lead to the top of the mountain, but allows you to reach the other side of the mountain thanks to a tunnel just under 400 metres long and built in four years of intensive work. Arriving on the other side, the traveller is greeted by a hotel-restaurant, currently in operation during the summer, which was converted from the miners’ accommodation once the tunnel work was completed. From the restaurant, the road descends rapidly with numerous narrow hairpin bends to the Sanctuary of San Giovanni D’Andorno.

The Sanctuary of San Giovanni D’Andorno is less well-known than that of Oropa, but it is surprising for its unexpected size and is currently undergoing restoration work that is returning it to its former glory.

Not satisfied with what I had done so far, I continued along Provincial Road 513 until I reached Rosazza, the birthplace of the senator with the same name. The village amazed me a lot with its many historical buildings and the refined style of the same, but although it was lunchtime, I could not find any open restaurant where I could eat.

Having followed the road on the outward journey, I returned to the Sanctuary of Oropa shortly before three o’clock in the afternoon. Just in time to have lunch at Trattoria Nocca with a well-deserved polenta concia.

I thus closed a beautiful bike tour just under 40 kilometres long and full of surprises and breathtaking views.
