Nell’articolo precedente dedicato alla zona intorno San Benedetto del Tronto, ho mostrato quanto visto della costa meridionale delle Marche nel corso delle mie vacanze in bici del 2021. Il giorno successivo sono tornato di nuovo sul mare ma per esplorare la costa settentrionale dell’Abruzzo. Superato il fiume Tronto che funge da confine fra le due regioni, Martinsicuro è il primo paese abruzzese che si incontra. E’ qui che, parcheggiata la mia Fiat 500, ho inforcato la bici e imboccato la lunga pista ciclabile che scende fino a Pescara. La ciclabile è molto ben fatta e straordinariamente panoramica. Con un occhio alle onde ed uno al suggestivo entroterra, sono passato per Alba Adriatica e Giulianova, dove mi sono fermato in un beach bar per alleviare piacevolmente l’arsura con frutta fresca e bibite varie.

Arrivato a Roseto Degli Abruzzi, ho avuto la spiacevole sorpresa di lavori ancora in corso per il ponte ciclopedonale sul fiume Vomano. Poco attratto dalla prospettiva di usare la trafficata statale per superare il fiume, ho deciso di non proseguire oltre e di pranzare al ristorante “Il Capitano”.

Nel primo pomeriggio, ho lasciato la costa per raggiungere Montepagano, un borgo arroccato sulla cima di una collina da cui si gode di uno splendido panorama sul mare e sull’entroterra abruzzese.

Tornato lungo la costa, sono rientrato ad un ritmo lento e piacevole. Giunto l’imbrunire, appena fuori Martinsicuro, ho fatto un bel bagno ristoratore ed ho cenato con arrosticini allo “Chalet Riccardo” concludendo una giornata davvero speciale per un percorso totale di ottanta chilometri.

In the previous article dedicated to the area around San Benedetto del Tronto, I showed what I saw of the southern coast of Marche during my cycling holiday in 2021. The next day I returned to the sea again but to explore the northern coast of Abruzzo. After crossing the Tronto river, which acts as the border between the two regions, Martinsicuro is the first town in Abruzzo that you encounter. It was here that, having parked my Fiat 500, I mounted my bike and took the long cycle path down to Pescara. The bike path is very well made and extraordinarily scenic. With one eye on the waves and one on the picturesque hinterland, I passed through Alba Adriatica and Giulianova, where I stopped at a beach bar to pleasantly relieve the heat with fresh fruit and various drinks.

Arriving in Roseto Degli Abruzzi, I had the unpleasant surprise of work still in progress on the cycle-pedestrian bridge over the Vomano river. Unattracted by the prospect of using the traffic-congested state road to cross the river, I decided not to go any further and to have lunch at “Il Capitano” restaurant.

In the early afternoon, I left the coast to reach Montepagano, a village perched on top of a hill with a splendid view of the sea and the Abruzzo hinterland.

Back along the coast, I returned at a slow and leisurely pace. At dusk, just outside Martinsicuro, I took a refreshing swim and dined with ”arrosticini” at ”Chalet Riccardo”, ending a very special day for a total of eighty kilometres.
