Come raccontato nell’articolo dedicato, il 2022 è stato l’anno in cui ho visitato il Museo della Seconda Guerra Mondiale del Fiume Po. Benché istituito fin dal 2006, ho saputo dell’esistenza di questo museo solo pochi mesi fa grazie ad alcune puntate di “Metal Detective” e, soprattutto, all’ampia copertura mediatica che ha avuto il recupero dal Po di un semicingolato tedesco nei primi mesi dell’anno. La grave secca che ha martoriato il grande fiume ha, infatti, permesso di individuare con precisione la posizione del veicolo e di riportare così alla luce un semicingolato Sd.Kfz.11 dopo quasi un secolo di oblio.

L’Sd.Kfz.11 fu prodotto in varie versioni per tutta la durata del conflitto. Suo principale ruolo era il traino di pezzi d’artiglieria leggera come il 10.5 cm leFH 18 (leichte Feldhaubitze 18), il cannone anticarro Pak-40 o il lanciarazzi Nebelwerfer. Nell’edizione 2018 del Militracks, potei ammirare un bellissimo Sd.Kfz.11 nella versione di produzione finale “Einheitsfahrerhaus”.

Dopo lo sfondamento delle ultime linee difensive tedesche sull’Appennino, il fronte raggiunse la Pianura Padana il 20 aprile 1945. Nel settore di Sermide, comune dove ha sede il Museo della Seconda Guerra Mondiale del Fiume Po, venne ordinato al 165. Artillerie-Regiment di organizzare una testa di ponte difensiva che resistette fino al 24 aprile, grazie anche al rinforzo di elementi della 1. e 4. Fallschirmjäger-Division e agli ultimi carri “Tiger I” del 504. Schwere-Panzerabteilung. Il 24 aprile lo sganciamento verso la sponda meridionale del fiume Po della maggioranza dei reparti del 165. Artillerie-Regiment fu coperto dal fuoco degli ultimi pezzi d’artiglieria sopravvissuti prima che gli stessi fossero sabotati una volta terminate le munizioni. Con ogni probabilità il semicingolato Sd.Kfz.11 recuperato nel Po fu uno di quei trattori che, lasciato il proprio cannone 10.5 cm leFH 18 in prima linea, trasportarono gran parte dei serventi fino alla spiaggia di Sermide. Qui, i veicoli furono abbandonati non essendo possibile il trasferimento sulla sponda nord del fiume.  Questo Sd.Kfz.11, spinto profondamente nel fiume, non poté essere totalmente smantellato dai recuperanti di metalli e, protetto dalla sabbia e dall’acqua, è arrivato fino ad oggi.

Solo la magra straordinaria che ha afflitto il fiume Po quest’anno, ha permesso di recuperare il veicolo. Lo stato di questo Sd.Kfz.11 può apparire pessimo ad un occhio poco attento ma, come ogni appassionato sa bene, si tratta di un recupero eccezionale poiché il semicingolato, come in una sorta di bolla temporale, è rimasto intoccato dal 1945 conservando parti della mimetica e degli stemmi originali nonché componenti della strumentazione elettrica. Non solo, le sospensioni funzionano ancora così come le articolazioni delle maglie dei cingoli. Il veicolo conservava anche parte del carico, compreso il freno oledinamico di rinculo di scorta del cannone leFH 18 trainato dal semicingolato.

L’esemplare è attualmente conservato presso il capannone ove sono collocati anche altri veicoli e reperti della collezione del Museo della Seconda Guerra Mondiale del Fiume Po. In attesa di trovare uno spazio dedicato, i visitatori possono attualmente accedere al capannone e vedere questo Sd.Kfz.11 solo in occasioni di eventi ed aperture straordinarie.

As I told in the relevant article, I visited the Museo della Seconda Guerra Mondiale del Fiume Po in 2022. Although established since 2006, I only learned of the existence of this museum a few months ago thanks to a few episodes of “Metal Detective” Tv show and, above all, to the extensive media coverage that the recovery from the Po of a German half-track received earlier in the year. The severe drought that ravaged the great river has, in fact, made possible to accurately identify the location of the vehicle and thus unearth an Sd.Kfz.11 half-track after almost a century of oblivion.

The Sd.Kfz.11 was produced in various versions throughout the conflict. Its main role was the towing of light artillery pieces such as the 10.5 cm leFH 18 (leichte Feldhaubitze 18), the Pak-40 anti-tank gun or the Nebelwerfer rocket launcher. In the 2018 edition of Militracks, I could admire a beautiful Sd.Kfz.11 in the final production version “Einheitsfahrerhaus“.

After the breakthrough of the last German defence lines on the Apennines, the front reached the Po Valley on 20 April 1945. In the sector of Sermide, the municipality where the Museo della Seconda Guerra Mondiale del Fiume Po is located, the order was given to 165. Artillerie-Regiment to organise a defensive bridgehead that resisted until 24 April, thanks also to the reinforcement of elements of the 1. and 4. Fallschirmjäger-Division and the last “Tiger I” tanks of the 504. Schwere-Panzerabteilung. On 24 April, the drop towards the southern bank of the Po River of the majority of the units of the 165. Artillerie-Regiment was covered by fire from the last surviving artillery pieces before they were sabotaged once their ammunition ran out. Probably the Sd.Kfz.11 half-track recovered from the Po was one of those tractors that, having left its 10.5 cm LeFH 18 gus in the front line, transported most of its servants to the beach at Sermide. Here, the vehicles were abandoned as their transfer to the north bank of the river was not possible.  This Sd.Kfz.11, driven deep into the river, could not be totally dismantled by the metal retrievers and, protected by sand and water, has survived until today.

Only the extraordinary meagre conditions that plagued the Po River this year made it possible to recover the vehicle. The state of this Sd.Kfz.11 may appear terrible to the unobservant eye but, as any enthusiast knows, it is an exceptional recovery since the half-track, as if in a sort of time bubble, has remained untouched since 1945, preserving parts of the original camouflage and insignia as well as components of the electrical instruments. Not only that, the suspension still works as do the track link joints. The vehicle also retained part of its load, including the stock recoil brake of the LeFH 18 gun pulled by the half-track.

The exemplar is currently kept in the warehouse where other vehicles and artefacts from the Museo della Seconda Guerra Mondiale del Fiume Po collection are also located. While waiting to find a dedicated space, visitors can currently access the warehouse and see this Sd.Kfz.11 only during special events and openings.
