Nel recentissimo articolo dedicato alla “Cherryton School” T-Shirt, ho avuto occasione di raccontare come la mia passione per i fumetti ed i cartoni animati giapponesi sia fortemente condizionata dall’attaccamento che nutro per serie figlie, come me, degli anni ’80 e ’90. Gli esempi sono numerosi: “Macross”, “Mobile Suit Gundam”, “The Secret of Blue Water”, “Neon Genesis Evangelion”, “Space Battleship Yamato”, solo per citarne alcuni. Questo fortissimo legale è alimentato da due aspetti molto importati: (i) il ricordo delle emozioni provate da giovane durante la visione e (ii) l’oggettiva originalità e qualità di opere che hanno condizionato ed influenzato tutto quanto è seguito. Inevitabilmente, nutro una certa diffidenza verso le opere degli autori di nuova generazione poiché, troppo spesso, rispecchiano gusti, temi ed estetiche che non mi appartengono. Un’importante eccezione è “Beastars”, fumetto a cui è dedicata la citata “Cherryton School” T-Shirt e questa “Cherryton School” Shopping Bag.

“Beastars” è un manga di Paru Itagaki in corso di pubblicazione in Italia e conclusosi in Giappone nel 2020. Da sempre interessato alle storie con protagonisti animali antropomorfi non ho resistito all’acquisto del primo volume restandone subito conquistato ed affascinato. “Beastars” ha certamente alcune similitudini con il bel film “Zootropolis” della Disney ma è impreziosito da temi, ambientazioni e sottotesti intensi ed estremamente attuali come il razzismo, le difficoltà insite in una società multietnica, gli istinti e la gestione degli stessi, l’uso della paura per giustificare regimi totalitari, etc. Grazie ai numerosi premi vinti ed all’apprezzamento del pubblico, “Beastars” ha avuto anche una trasposizione animata di cui si attende a breve la seconda stagione.

I personaggi principali di “Beastars” sono studenti della “Cherryton School”, fiore all’occhiello della città ove è ambientata la storia ed ultimo istituto scolastico ove erbivori e carnivori coesistono in classi miste. A tale scuola è dedicata la Shopping Bag in oggetto su cui è rappresentato il simbolo della stessa. Con una grafica forse non molto riuscita, l’emblema appare strappato dagli inconfondibili artigli di un predatore. Lo scopo è evidente, simboleggiare il tumulto di paure, istinti e pregiudizi che serpeggiano e condizionano tutta la società rappresentata in “Beastars”.

Come nel caso della “Urusey Yatsura” Shopping Bag, questa sportina è prodotta da Cospa, società giapponese specializzata in merchandising dedicato agli Anime e Manga di successo. Come d’abitudine per gli articoli Cospa, anche questa borsa è di ottima qualità. La tela e le cuciture sono molto resistenti come è giusto che sia dovendo reggere un peso importante. Come già rilevato per la “Cherryton School” T-Shirt,  l’unica, personale critica la riservo alla grafica apposta che trovo banale e poco comprensibile.

Proprio per compensare quest’ultimo aspetto, sempre tramite l’ottimo servizio di vendita online offerto da Hobby Link Japan, ho comprato tre simpatici Tsumamare, immagini stampate su supporto acrilico che possono essere usate come portachiavi, cinturini per cellulare o semplici mascotte da fissare a borse e zaini grazie ai diversi agganci disponibili. Gli Tsumamare in questione ritraggono ovviamente personaggi di “Beastars”: Legoshi, il lupo grigio protagonista, la coniglietta Haru di cui è innamorato ed il cervo rosso Louis, senpai di entrambi. Le illustrazioni riprodotte sono una simpatica versione superdeformed dei personaggi con alcune caratteristiche peculiari. Per esempio,  Legoshi indossa la divisa scolastica della “Cherryton School” ed Haru ha in mano un vaso di fiori data la sua passione per la botanica. La simpatia di questi Tsumamare è incrementata dal fatto che i personaggi sembrano davvero appesi per i gancetti inclusi nelle confezioni.

Ho prontamente appeso i tre Tsumamare alle maniglia della “Cherryton School” Shopping Bag creando così un insieme molto simpatico. Resta inteso che gli Tsumamare Hanno compromesso in parte la comodità di utilizzo della Shopping Bag e che è necessario prestare attenzione a non straparli o perderli. Ciò detto, fare la spessa con questa “Cherryton School” Shopping Bag mi regala grandi soddisfazioni!

In the recent article dedicated to the “Cherryton School” T-Shirt, I had the opportunity to tell how my passion for comics and Japanese cartoons is strongly conditioned by the attachment I have for series that are daughters, like me, of the ’80s and ’90s. The examples are numerous: “Macross“, “Mobile Suit Gundam“, “The Secret of Blue Water“, “Neon Genesis Evangelion“, “Space Battleship Yamato”. This strong bond is based on two very important aspects: (i) the memory of the emotions I felt when I was young while watching and (ii) the objective originality and quality of works that have conditioned and influenced everything that followed. Inevitably, I have a certain mistrust towards the works of the new generation authors because, too often, they reflect tastes, themes and aesthetics that do not belong to me. An important exception is “Beastars“, a comic strip to which the aforementioned “Cherryton School” T-Shirt and this “Cherryton School” Shopping Bag are dedicated.

“Beastars” is a manga by Paru Itagaki currently being published in Italy and ended in Japan in 2020. I’ve always been interested in stories with anthropomorphic animals as protagonists and I couldn’t resist buying the first volume, being immediately conquered and fascinated.  “Beastars” certainly has some similarities with the fine Disney’s movie “Zootropolis” but it is enriched by intense and extremely themes, settings and subtexts such as racism, the difficulties inherent in a multi-ethnic society, instincts and their management, the use of fear to justify totalitarian regimes, etc. Thanks to the numerous prizes won and the appreciation of the public, “Beastars” has also been adapted into an animated version, the second season of which is expected soon.

The main characters of “Beastars” are students of the “Cherryton School“, the pride of the town where the story is set and the last school where herbivores and carnivores coexist in mixed classes. The Shopping Bag in question is dedicated to this school, on which the school’s symbol is represented. With graphics that are perhaps not very successful, the emblem appears to have been torn by the unmistakable claws of a predator. The purpose is clear, symbolize the tumult of fears, instincts and prejudices that conditioned the whole society represented in “Beastars“.

As in the case of the “Urusey Yatsura” Shopping Bag, this bag is produced by Cospa, a Japanese company specialising in merchandising dedicated to successful Anime and Manga. As usual for Cospa items, this bag is of very good quality. The canvas and the stitching are very strong, as it should be since it has to bear a heavy weight. As for the “Cherryton School” T-Shirt, my only personal criticism is the graphic design, which I find banal and not very understandable.

Just to compensate this last aspect, always through the excellent online sale service offered by Hobby Link Japan, I bought three nice Tsumamare, images printed on acrylic support that can be used as key rings, mobile phone straps or simple mascots to be fixed to bags and backpacks thanks to the different hooks available. The Tsumamare in question obviously depict characters from “Beastars“: Legoshi, the grey wolf protagonist, the bunny Haru with whom he is in love and the red deer Louis, the senpai of both. The illustrations reproduced are a nice super-deformed version of the characters with some peculiar features. For example, Legoshi wears the school uniform of the “Cherryton School” and Haru is holding a vase of flowers because of his passion for botany. The likability of these Tsumamare is increased by the fact that the characters really seem to be hanging from the hooks included in the packaging.

I promptly hung the three Tsumamare on the handles of the ‘Cherryton School’ Shopping Bag to create a very nice ensemble. It is understood that the Tsumamare have somewhat compromised the convenience of using the Shopping Bag and care must be taken not to lose them. Having said that, I’m very pleased with this “Cherryton School” Shopping Bag!
