La mia passione per i fumetti ed i cartoni animati giapponesi non è certo una novità su questo blog. Non manco occasione, infatti,  di recensire gli acquisti che, in negozio o online, mi capita di fare in questo variegato settore dell’entertainment nipponico. Che siano libri d’illustrazioni, vestiario o gadget di ogni tipo, adoro esprimere il mio interesse per talune opere indossando T-shirt a tema o sfogliando pubblicazioni dedicate a serie come “Macross”, “Mobile Suit Gundam”, “The Secret of Blue Water”, “Neon Genesis Evangelion”, “Space Battleship Yamato”, etc. Questa mia passione si concentra sulle opere che, fra gli anni ’80 e ’90, ho conosciuto da giovane o da giovanissimo; fumetti e cartoni che, nel bene o nel male, hanno contribuito alla mia formazione ed a rendermi l’adulto che oggi sono. Ne consegue che, a causa della mia “stagionatura”, ho serie difficoltà ad approcciarmi agli autori di nuova generazione ed alle loro opere, essendo novità che raramente rispecchiano gusti, temi ed estetiche che non mi appartengono. Un’importante eccezione è “Beastars” a cui questa “Cherryton School” T-Shirt è dedicata.

“Beastars” è un manga di Paru Itagaki in corso di pubblicazione in Italia e conclusosi in Giappone nel 2020. Ho acquistato il primo volume di “Beastars” per curiosità. Da sempre interessato alle storie con protagonisti animali antropomorfi mi aspettavo una copia di “Zootropolis”. Benché siano innegabili alcune similitudini con l’ottimo film Disney, il taglio nettamente più adulto di “Beastars” dona alla storia narrata un fascino di cui mi sono subito innamorato.  “Beastars” è certamente un fumetto d’intrattenimento ma è impreziosito da temi, ambientazioni e sottotesti intensi ed estremamente attuali come il razzismo, le difficoltà insite in una società multietnica, gli istinti e la gestione degli stessi, l’uso della paura per giustificare regimi totalitari, etc. Non mancano meccanismi tipici dei shōnen manga come, ad esempio, i duelli con avversari sempre più pericolosi ma il tutto è gestito dall’autrice senza scadere nella banale ripetitività di opere alla “Dragon Ball”. I personaggi, tutti splendidamente caratterizzati ed al centro di importanti cicli narrativi, sono chiamati a sfide (non solo fisiche) che rappresentano un percorso di crescita così intenso e coinvolgente da rendere arduo eleggere il giovane lupo Legoshi a protagonista esclusivo di “Beastars”.

I personaggi principali di “Beastars” sono studenti della “Cherryton School”, fiore all’occhiello della città ove è ambientata la storia ed ultimo istituto scolastico ove erbivori e carnivori coesistono in classi miste. A tale scuola è dedicata la T-Shirt in oggetto su cui è rappresentato il simbolo della stessa. Con una grafica forse non molto riuscita, l’emblema appare strappato dagli inconfondibili artigli di un predatore. Lo scopo è evidente, simboleggiare il tumulto di paure, istinti e pregiudizi che serpeggiano e condizionano tutta la società rappresentata in “Beastars”.

Come molte altre in mio possesso, anche questa T-shirt è prodotta da Cospa, società giapponese specializzata in merchandising dedicato agli Anime e Manga di maggior successo. Senza togliere nulla alla qualità complessiva della maglietta, non la reputo fra le migliori prodotte da Cospa. Il blu di fondo è opaco ed anonimo e la grafica apposta non è di immediata comprensione. Ritengo che Cospa avrebbe potuto sforzarsi maggiormente per rendere miglior omaggio ad un’opera di prestigio come “Beastars”. Devo, purtroppo, anche segnalare un difetto di produzione sulla manica sinistra che, corretto prontamente con ago e filo, non migliora il giudizio complessivo sulla maglietta.

Difetto che certamente non dipende da Hobby Link Japan, l’ottimo sito di e-commerce da tempo divenuto mio principale punto di riferimento per i miei acquisti nipponici.

My passion for comics and Japanese cartoons is certainly not a news on this blog. In fact, I never miss a chance to review my purchases, in shops or online, in this sector of Japanese entertainment. Whether they are picture books, clothing or gadgets of any kind, I love to express my interest in certain works by wearing themed T-shirts or viewing publications dedicated to series like “Macross“, “Mobile Suit Gundam“, “The Secret of Blue Water“, “Neon Genesis Evangelion“, “Space Battleship Yamato“, etc. My passion is focused on the works that, between the 80s and the 90s, I’ve seen when I was young or very young; comics and cartoons that, for better or for worse, have contributed to my education and to make me the adult I am today. It follows that I have serious difficulties in approaching the authors of the new generation and their works, as they are new and rarely reflect tastes, themes and aesthetics that do not belong to me. One notable exception is “Beastars” to whom this “Cherryton School” T-Shirt is dedicated.

“Beastars” is a manga by Paru Itagaki currently being published in Italy and ending in Japan in 2020. I bought the first volume of “Beastars” out of curiosity. Having always been interested in stories with anthropomorphic animals as protagonists, I expected a copy of “Zootropolis“. Although there are undeniable similarities with the excellent Disney film, the much more adult nature of “Beastars” gives the story a charm that I immediately fell in love with.  “Beastars” is certainly an entertainment comic but it is enriched by intense and extremely topical themes, settings and subtexts such as racism, the difficulties inherent in a multi-ethnic society, instincts and their management, the use of fear to justify totalitarian regimes, etc.. There is no lack of mechanisms typical of shōnen manga such as, for example, duels with increasingly dangerous opponents, but everything is managed by the author without expiring in the banal repetitiveness of “Dragon Ball” works. The characters, all splendidly characterized and at the centre of important narrative cycles, are called to challenges (not only physical) that represent a path of growth so intense and involving that it is difficult to elect the young wolf Legoshi as the exclusive protagonist of “Beastars“.

The main characters in “Beastars” are students at the “Cherryton School“, the pride of the town where the story is set and the last school where herbivores and carnivores coexist in mixed classes. The T-Shirt in question is dedicated to this school, on which its symbol is represented. With a graphic design that is perhaps not very successful, the emblem appears torn by the unmistakable claws of a predator. The aim is obvious, to symbolise the turmoil of fears, instincts and prejudices that snake and condition the whole society represented in “Beastars“.

Like many others in my possession, also this T-shirt is produced by Cospa, a Japanese company specialized in merchandising dedicated to the most successful Anime and Manga. Without taking anything away from the overall quality of the T-shirt, I don’t consider it one of the best produced by Cospa. The blue background is opaque and anonymous and the graphics are not immediately understandable. I think Cospa could have made more effort to pay better homage to a prestigious work like “Beastars“. Unfortunately, I must also point out a manufacturing defect on the left sleeve which, promptly corrected with needle and thread, does not improve the overall judgment of the shirt.

This defect is certainly not due to Hobby Link Japan, the excellent e-commerce site that has long become my main point of reference for my Japanese purchases.
