E’ in corso a Milano, presso Fabbrica del Vapore – Spazio Ex Cisterne, la mostra “Manga Heroes”. Dal 9 ottobre 2021 al 2 gennaio 2022 è possibile visitare un’esposizione che rappresenta un unicum senza precedenti, almeno a memoria personale. In una decina di sale, si dipana una variegata collezione che traccia un’interessante panoramica su Anime, Manga e Tokusatsu, i film e telefilm su mostri e supereroi realizzati con effetti artigianali.

La mostra è un vero e proprio viaggio che inizia negli anni ’50, grazie ad Osamu Tezuka e Ishirō Honda, e prosegue fino ai giorni nostri. L’argomento è vastissimo per poter essere trattato in modo esaustivo perciò la mostra si concentra sulle opere più note al pubblico occidentale. Grazie ad innumerevoli pezzi (alcuni unici) raccolti da importanti collezionisti italiani, “Manga Heroes” offre ai visitatori un’interessante carrellata che spazia dai materiali di produzione (animation cell, tavole, schizzi preparatori, copioni, etc.) al merchandising che ha favorito e decretato il successo delle opere esposte.  Manifesti, materiali promozionali, giochi, giocattoli, modellini, figure e statue da collezione sono il vero cuore dell’esposizione che diventa un nostalgico tuffo nel passato per tutti i visitatori che, da piccoli, hanno desiderato (spesso inutilmente) i giocattoli ivi esposti.

“Manga Heroes” è una mostra molto particolare sia per i temi trattati sia per il materiale esposto che, non raramente, sfiora il kitsch spinto. Ciononostante merita un visita attenta da parte tanto degli appassionati quanto di tutti i curiosi che volessero saperne di più su un mondo che è entrato di diritto dell’immaginario collettivo. Personalmente mi auguro che la mostra abbia un buon successo di pubblico incoraggiando iniziative simili, preferibilmente dedicate ad opere specifiche da trattare nel dettaglio.

The “Manga Heroes” exhibition is currently underway in Milan, at Fabbrica del Vapore – Spazio Ex Cisterne. From October 9th, 2021 to January 2nd, 2022 it is possible to visit an exhibition that represents an unicum, at least in my memory. In ten rooms about, a varied collection provides an interesting overview of Anime, Manga and Tokusatsu, the films and TV series about monsters and superheroes made with handcrafted effects.

The exhibition is a travel that begins in the 1950s, thanks to Osamu Tezuka and Ishirō Honda, and continues to the present day. The subject matter is too vast to be exhaustively dealt, so the exhibition focuses on the Western public best known works. Thanks to countless pieces (some of which are unique) collected by important Italian collectors, “Manga Heroes” offers visitors an interesting overview ranging from production materials (animation cells, plates, preparatory sketches, scripts, etc.) to the merchandising that favored and decreed the success of the works on display.  Posters, promotional materials, games, toys, models, collectible figures and statues are the true heart of the exhibition, which becomes a nostalgic plunge into the past for all those visitors who, as children, longed (often in vain) for the toys on display.

“Manga Heroes” is a very special exhibition, both for the themes dealt with and the material on display which, not infrequently, verges on kitsch. Nevertheless, it deserves an attentive visit by both fans and the curious who want to learn more about a world that has entered by right into the collective imagination. Personally, I hope that the exhibition will be a great success with the public, encouraging similar initiatives, preferably dedicated to specific works to be treated in detail.
