È ormai risaputo che la serie animata “Macross” del 1982 sia una delle mie preferite in assoluto. “Macross” è uno dei capisaldi dell’animazione nipponica. Realizzata nel 1982, la serie arrivò in Italia nel 1986. Benché pesantemente modificata dagli Americani, me ne innamorai a tal punto da esserne appassionatissimo ancora oggi. Le ragioni di questa devozione incondizionata sono innumerevoli ma ruolo fondamentale ha certamente il caccia a configurazione variabile VF-1 “Valkyrie”, frutto creativo del geniale mecha designer Shoji Kawamori. I VF-1 sono velivoli realizzati grazie alla tecnologia aliena recuperata da un relitto spaziale precipitato sulla terra in un ipotetico 1999 e costituiscono il nucleo principale della U.N. Spacy, la flotta spaziale terrestre chiamata a difendere il nostro pianeta dagli Zentradi, una razza aliena dalle intenzioni tutt’altro che pacifiche.

Dopo i fasti del film cinematografico “Macross – Ai Oboete Imasu ka” del 1984, la serie si è evoluta in prequel, sequel e spin-off non sempre ben riusciti. Fra essi spicca per qualità ed originalità “Macross Plus”, sequel diretto della serie capostipite realizzato nella prima metà degli anni ’90. I quattro episodi che compongo “Macross Plus”, opera destinata al solo mercato dell’Home Video (OAV), furono diretti (non senza attriti) da Shoji Kawamori e Shinichiro Watanabe (creatore di “Cowboy BePop”) con musica di Yoko Kanno (e scusate se è poco!). La storia si dipana 28 anni dopo gli eventi narrati in “Macross” ed hanno come protagonisti i piloti Isamu Dyson e Guld Bowman. Fra i due vige una profonda antipatia ed una grandissima rivalità per svariati motivi, primo fra tutti il fatto di essere i collaudatori del progetto “Super Nova”, i segretissimi test avviati dalla U.N. Spacy per sancire il successore del VF-1 “Valkyrie”, il YF-19 “Excalibur” delle Shinsei Industries o il YF-21 delle Galaxy Industries.

Date queste premesse, non stupirà sapere che ho prontamente acquistato la YF19/YF 21 “Macross Plus” T-shirt. Questa fantastica maglietta, recentemente commercializzata in Giappone da Cospa, celebra al meglio la serie “Macross Plus”, richiamando non solo il progetto “Super Nova” ma anche i prototipi YF-19 e YF-21  con delle belle viste tecniche che paiono fronteggiarsi.

Come tutte le T-shirt prodotte da Cospa, anche questa maglietta è di ottima qualità come dimostrano la precisione del taglio e delle cuciture nonché, cosa essenziale, il dettaglio della stampa riprodotta. Concludo con un plauso ad Hobby Link Japan, l’ottimo sito di e-commerce da tempo divenuto mio principale punto di riferimento per gli acquisti nipponici.

It is now common knowledge that the 1982 animated series “Macross” is one of my absolute favorite Anime. “Macross” is one of the cornerstones of Japanese animation. Made in 1982, the series arrived in Italy in 1986. Although heavily modified by the Americans, I fell in love with it to such that I am still passionate about it today. The reasons for this unconditional devotion are innumerable, but a fundamental role is certainly played by the variable configuration fighter VF-1 “Valkyrie”, fruit of the brilliant mecha designer Shoji Kawamori. The VF-1s are aircraft made from alien technology recovered from a space wreckage that crashed to Earth in a hypothetical 1999, and constitute the main nucleus of the U.N. Spacy, the Earth’s space fleet called to defend our planet from the Zentradi, an alien race with intentions that are anything but peaceful.

After the glories of the 1984 movie “Macross – Ai Oboete Imasu ka”, the series evolved into prequels, sequels and spin-offs that were not always successful. Standing out among them for quality and originality is “Macross Plus”’, a direct sequel to the main series made in the first half of the 1990s. The four episodes that compose “Macross Plus”, a work destined only for the Home Video market (OAV), were directed (not without friction) by Shoji Kawamori and Shinichiro Watanabe (creator of “Cowboy BePop”’) with music by Yoko Kanno (and excuse me if that’s not enough!). The story takes place 28 years after the events narrated in “Macross” and starring pilots Isamu Dyson and Guld Bowman. Between the two there is a deep dislike and a great rivalry for various reasons, first of all the fact that they are the test pilots of the “Super Nova” project, the very secret tests started by U.N. Spacy to establish the successor of the VF-1 “Valkyrie“, the YF-19 “Excalibur” of Shinsei Industries or the YF-21 of Galaxy Industries.

Given this background, it will come as no surprise to learn that I promptly purchased the YF19/YF 21 “Macross Plus” T-shirt. This fantastic T-shirt, recently marketed in Japan by Cospa, celebrates the “Macross Plus” series at its best, recalling not only the “Super Nova” project but also the YF-19 and YF-21 prototypes with beautiful technical views that seem to face each other.

Like all the T-shirts produced by Cospa, this one is of excellent quality as demonstrated by the precision of the cut and stitching as well as, what is essential, the detail of the print reproduced. I conclude with an applause to Hobby Link Japan, the excellent e-commerce site that has long become my main point of reference for Japanese purchases.
