Situato vicino all’aeroporto internazionale di Malpensa, l’ex aeroporto militare di Lonate Pozzolo ha una storia affascinante legata indissolubilmente alla Caproni, una delle prime ditte aeronautiche in Italia. Fondata dall’ingegnere Gianni Caproni, la Caproni si stabilì a Cascina Malpensa nel 1910 per poi trasferirsi a Vizzola Ticino nel 1911. Durante gli anni ’20 e ’30, la Caproni testò e collaudò proprio a Lonate Pozzolo numerosi aerei destinata alla Regia Aeronautica.

La costruzione dell’aeroporto militare iniziò nel 1916 e, fra anni ’20 e ’30, divenne una base importante per la Regia Aeronautica. Tra i modelli di aerei utilizzati in questo periodo troviamo gli aerosiluranti Savoia-Marchetti S.M.79 e i caccia Macchi M.C.202 e M.C.205. Dopo l’armistizio dell’8 settembre 1943, l’aeroporto fu occupato dalla Luftwaffe, che vi stazionò vari reparti equipaggiati con Messerschmitt Bf-109 e Junkers Ju-87 “Stuka”. Parallelamente, l’aeroporto ospitò anche il 1º Gruppo caccia “Asso di Bastoni” dell’aeronautica della Repubblica Sociale Italiana, che utilizzava i Macchi M.C.205 e i Messerschmitt Bf-109 di produzione tedesca (soprattutto nelle versioni G e K).

Oggi, l’area dell’ex aeroporto è diventata un parco che offre un interessante percorso storico. Lungo la Via Gaggio, una strada che attraversa la brughiera del Parco del Ticino, è possibile vedere i resti delle strutture militari della Seconda Guerra Mondiale. Questo percorso è un vero e proprio museo a cielo aperto, dove si possono ammirare le vecchie trincee, le fondamenta di alcuni baraccamenti, le piste di raccordo e le piazzole per il parcheggio degli aerei.

Una piazzola particolarmente ben conservata stupisce per le sue dimensioni e per l’imponente trincea paraschegge. Sul fondo di quest’ultima, una complessa struttura in cemento sembra essere stata progettata per spezzare il flusso d’aria generato dalle eliche, limitando il sollevamento di polvere.

L’aeroporto è vicino a casa mia e spesso lo raggiungo in bicicletta percorrendo la ciclabile del Canale Villoresi. Usufruisco dell’ingresso sul lato di Oleggio, dove sorge il ponte sul Ticino e la vecchia dogana austriaca. In bicicletta è anche possibile arrivare agevolmente sul confine con l’Aeroporto di Malpensa per ammirare gli aerei in fase di atterraggio su una delle piste più vicine al vecchio aeroporto.

Non è facile recuperare notizie precise sull’ex base militare di Lonate Pozzolo ma mi auguro che le foto mostrate in questo articolo aiutino a immaginare la storia e l’importanza di questo luogo.

Located near Malpensa International Airport, the former military airport of Lonate Pozzolo has a fascinating history inextricably linked to Caproni, one of the first aeronautical companies in Italy. Founded by the engineer Gianni Caproni, Caproni settled in Cascina Malpensa in 1910 and then moved to Vizzola Ticino in 1911. During the ’20s and ’30s, Caproni tested numerous aircraft for the Regia Aeronautica in Lonate Pozzolo.

The construction of the military airport began in 1916 and, between the 20s and 30s, it became an important base for the Regia Aeronautica. Among the aircraft used in this period we find the Savoia-Marchetti S.M.79 torpedo bombers  and the Macchi M.C.202 and M.C.205 fighters. After the armistice of 8 September 1943, the airport was occupied by Luftwaffe, which stationed various units equipped with Messerschmitt Bf-109 and Junkers Ju-87 “Stuka”. At the same time, the airport also hosted the 1st “Asso di Bastoni” fighter group of the Italian Social Republic Air Force, which used the Macchi M.C.205 and the German-made Messerschmitt Bf-109 (especially in  the G and K versions).

Today, the area of the former airport has become a park that offers an interesting historical route. Along the Via Gaggio, a road that crosses the moorland of the Ticino Park, you can see the remains of military structures from the Second World War. This route is a real open-air museum, where you can admire the old trenches, the foundations of some barracks, the runways and the pitches for parking planes.

A particularly well-preserved pitch impresses with its size and the imposing anti-fragment trench. At the bottom of the latter, a complex concrete structure seems to have been designed to break the airflow generated by the propellers, limiting the raising of dust.

The airport is close to my home and I often reach it by bicycle along the Villoresi Canal cycle path. I use the entrance on the Oleggio side, where the bridge over the Ticino river and the old Austrian customs stand there. By bicycle it is also possible to easily reach the border with Malpensa Airport to admire the planes landing on one of the runways closest to the old airport.

It is not easy to retrieve precise information on the former military base of Lonate Pozzolo but I hope that the photos shown in this article will help to imagine the history and importance of this place.
