Qualche settimana fa, ho pubblicato l’articolo dedicato al kit Tamiya del Dornier Do-335 B2 in scala 1/48. In tale contesto, ho brevemente riassunto l’affascinante storia del velivolo e del contesto in cui è stato sviluppato. Il Do-335 fu costruito in poche decine di esemplari di preproduzione che conobbero un uso prettamente sperimentale. Esclusi i prototipi (Do-335 A0), tre furono le principali varianti: il Do-335 A1 (caccia-bombardiere monoposto), il Do-335 B2 (dotato di due cannoni alari 3cm MK-103 aggiuntivi) ed il Do-335 A12 (biposto da addestramento). Gli esemplari costruiti furono sottoposti a modifiche per testare le potenzialità di versioni specializzate come il Do-335 A6 (biposto da caccia notturna). Ancora più numerose furono le varianti soltanto progettate fra cui la mia preferita è la B6 oggetto del set di conversione in scala 1/48 commercializzato da Vespa Models.

Il Dornier Do-335 B6 era la versione “Nachtjäger” (caccia notturno) del Do-335 B2 oppure, da un altro punto di vista, il Do-335 B6 era un Do-335 A6 con due cannoni alari 3cm MK-103. Comunque sia, il Dornier Do-335 B6 era stato pensato come un Do-335 biposto, pesantemente armato ed equipaggiato di radar FuG 202 Lichtenstein e FuG 350 Naxos per la caccia notturna. Inutile dire che considero il Dornier Do-335 B6 un velivolo affascinante in quanto somma efficacemente l’innovazione tecnologica del Do-335 con l’attrattiva insita tanto nel concetto di “Zerstörer” quanto nella specializzazione del “Nachtjäger”. Date queste premesse, non stupirà sapere che ho accolto ed acquistato con grande entusiasmo il set Vespa Models che, appunto, consente di convertire il kit Tamiya del Do-335 A1 in Do-335 A6, oppure il kit del Do-335 B2 in Do-335 B6.

Il Dornier Do-335 B6 – 1/48 Vespa Models Conversion Set ha un ché di eccezionale. Il Dornier Do-335, infatti, è per lo più riprodotto in scala 1/72 ed 1/32. Non manca la versione “Nachtjäger” proposta da Dragon in 1/72 e da Trumpeter in 1/32. Tamiya è il principale produttore del Dornier Do-335 in scala 1/48 ma non ha mai realizzato la versione da caccia notturna. Il set di Vespa Models è, di conseguenza, essenziale se si desidera realizzare il modello del Do-335 A6 o B6 in scala 1/48.

Il Dornier Do-335 B6 – 1/48 Vespa Models Conversion Set contiene 21 pezzi totali. Alle classiche parti in resina ed in vacuum form, la conversione Vespa Models offre anche le antenne radar in metallo realizzate da Master. Quest’ultimo è un accessorio molto importante per la resa finale del modello poiché le antenne radar sono parti molto sottili impossibili da riprodurre efficacemente in resina o plastica.

Tutto ciò detto, il Dornier Do-335 B6 – 1/48 Vespa Models Conversion Set appare essere un ottimo prodotto ma, come tutti i kit di conversione, necessita un lavoro di preparazione e modifica del modello di partenza che solo una mano esperta può fare. In ogni caso, il risultato finale dipenderà anche dalla qualità e precisione dei pezzi contenuti nel set di conversione. Ne deriva che un giudizio finale potrà essere espresso solo quando mi cimenterò nella realizzazione del modello in questione.

A few weeks ago, I published the article dedicated to the Tamiya kit  of the Dornier Do-335 B2 in 1/48 scale. In this context, I have briefly summarized the fascinating history of the aircraft and the context in which it was developed. The Do-335 was built in a few dozen pre-production units that were used experimentally only. Excluding the prototypes (Do-335 A0), there were three main variants: the Do-335 A1 (single-seat fighter-bomber), the Do-335 B2 (equipped with two additional 3cm MK-103 wing guns) and the Do-335 A12 (two-seat trainer). The built aircraft were modified to test the capabilities of specialized versions such as the Do-335 A6 (two-seat night fighter). Numerous were the variants that were only designed, among which my favorite is the B6, object of the 1/48 scale conversion set marketed by Vespa Models.

The Dornier Do-335 B6 was the “Nachtjäger” (night fighter) version of the Do-335 B2 or, from another point of view, the Do-335 B6 was a Do-335 A6 with two 3cm MK-103 wing guns. Be that as it may, the Dornier Do-335 B6 was designed as a two-seat Do-335, heavily armed and equipped with FuG 202 Lichtenstein and FuG 350 Naxos radars for night hunting. I consider the Dornier Do-335 B6 a fascinating aircraft as it effectively combines the technological innovation of the Do-335 with the attractiveness inherent in both the concept of the “Zerstörer” and the specialization of the “Nachtjäger“. Given these premises, it will not be surprising to know that I welcomed and purchased with great enthusiasm the Vespa Models set  which, in fact, allows you to convert the Tamiya kit  of the Do-335 A1 into Do-335 A6, or the kit of the  Do-335 B2 into Do-335 B6.

The Dornier Do-335 B6 – 1/48 Vespa Models Conversion Set is exceptional. The Dornier Do-335, in fact, is mostly reproduced in 1/72 and 1/32 scale. There is also the “Nachtjäger” version proposed by Dragon in 1/72 and by Trumpeter in 1/32. Tamiya is the main manufacturer of the 1/48 scale Dornier Do-335 but has never made the night fighter version. The Vespa Models set is, therefore, essential if you want to make the model of the Do-335 A6 or B6 in 1/48 scale.

The Dornier Do-335 B6 – 1/48 Vespa Models Conversion Set contains 21 total pieces. In addition to the classic resin and vacuum form parts, the Vespa Models conversion also offers metal radar antennas made by Master. The latter is a very important accessory for the final performance of the model since radar antennas are very thin parts that are impossible to reproduce effectively in resin or plastic.

That said, the Dornier Do-335 B6 – 1/48 Vespa Models Conversion Set appears to be an excellent product but, like all  conversion kits, it requires a work of preparation and modification of the starting model that only an expert hand can do. In any case, the final result will also depend on the quality and precision of the parts contained in the conversion set. It follows that a final judgment can only be expressed when I will make the model in question.
